Rules

• +Allowed from sunrise to sunset year-round.
• +All holes must be filled and sand replaced before you leave.
• +Maximum dig depth: 12 inches.
• +No detecting within designated swim areas during lifeguard hours (Memorial Day - Labor Day).
• +No detecting on or near lifeguard stands.
• +No digging in dunes, sea oats, or protected vegetation.
• +Protected bird nesting areas (piping plovers) are off-limits - look for posted signs.

Restricted

• xFirst Landing State Park (Chesapeake Bay side) - state park rules prohibit metal detecting.
• xMilitary installation boundaries (Dam Neck, NAS Oceana) - absolutely no access.
• xItems appearing to be archaeological or historically significant must be left in place and reported to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Pro tips

• ->Best public access: the oceanfront from Rudee Inlet north to 89th Street.
• ->Sandbridge (south of Rudee) is less hunted and produces excellent finds after storms.
• ->Low tide on a weekday morning is your best window - beach is empty and freshly exposed.

• +Maximum dig depth: 6 inches.
• +All holes must be fully filled immediately after digging.
• +No detecting in roped-off dune protection areas.
• +No detecting in designated swim areas during swim season.
• +No detecting in camping areas within state parks.

Restricted

• xFenced bird nesting zones (piping plovers, least terns) - posted and enforced seasonally.
• xArchaeological sites - any pre-contact or historical site features must not be disturbed.
• xDelaware Seashore State Park: check the park office for any current seasonal restrictions.

Pro tips

• ->The beach between Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island is lightly hunted - worth exploring.
• ->Post-storm low tides at Lewes Beach (Delaware Bay side) can expose targets that haven't been hunted in years.
• ->The Cape Henlopen day-use fee is worth it - the beach is large and receives significant storm wash.

Rules

• +Metal detecting is allowed on the ocean beach strand of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
• +Allowed year-round, no seasonal hour restrictions on the beach.
• +All holes must be filled before leaving.
• +Modern lost personal property (coins, jewelry) may be removed.
• +Natural resources (shells, sand dollars) may not be removed from NPS land.
• +Recovery of items requires minimal disturbance - no mechanical digging equipment.

Restricted

• xArchaeological and historic sites - strictly protected under ARPA (Archaeological Resources Protection Act). Penalties up to $20,000 and imprisonment.
• xAny item appearing to be older than 100 years or of historical significance must be left in place and reported to NPS.
• xPea Island National Wildlife Refuge - NO metal detecting. This is federally protected wildlife refuge land.
• xFenced shorebird nesting zones (piping plovers, Wilson's plover, American oystercatcher) - seasonal closures, strictly enforced.
• xCape Lookout National Seashore - same rules as Cape Hatteras, but the remoteness means access requires a ferry.

Pro tips

• ->Hatteras Island south of Avon is the least-hunted section of the OBX. Long drive, big reward.
• ->After nor'easters, the beach between Oregon Inlet and Rodanthe can expose shell hash layers with old coins.
• ->Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills municipal beaches have no NPS restrictions - ideal for straightforward hunting.
• ->Ocracoke Island (accessible by ferry) receives minimal hunting pressure and has a long history of maritime activity.
